Bio
Swiss Artist Adrian Falkner / SMASH137, born in 1979, is one of the most influential graffiti artists in Europe – his style has significantly affected the international graffiti scene.
His work combines abstract and gestural painting with graffiti techniques. His spontaneous use of colour, his expressive forms and accurate swings give rise to a dense dynamic in the finished work.
In addition to the spray can he uses various other materials such as ink, acrylic and oil pastels to create a contrasting, vivid surface.
While style-writing has always been character based, letters are completely missing in Falkner’s current work. They have been replaced by a distinctive stylistic idiom developed by the artist. Adrian Falkner ‚writes‘ his paintings. The direction of flow from left to right and the cursive element are still visible.
But every single stroke he draws is the result of a concrete decision. The line should not only work in combination with other elements, each one must be strong on its own.
As a product of human handwriting no stroke will ever be perfect, and it is precisely the appeal of this imperfection the artist is trying to emphasize in his current work.
For the past 20 years, Adrian Falkner has been a graffiti writer in the urban space under the pseudonym SMASH137. His precision with the spray can and his innovative ways of handling the traditional idiom of style-writing have been influential worldwide.
Instead of limiting his artistic communication exclusively to the graffiti scene, he has been trying to reach a greater audience by creating work for interior spaces and for international galleries and museums for more than 10 years.
The artists lives and works in Basel, Switzerland.

Der Schweizer Künstler zählt unter dem Namen Smash137 zu den besten und einflussreichsten Graffiti-Künstlern Europas und hat mit seinem Stil die internationale Writer Szene nachhaltig beeinflusst.
Der 1979 geborene Adrian Falkner ist ein zeitgenössischer Künstler, in dessen Arbeiten abstrakte, gestische Malerei auf Graffititechniken treffen. Durch den lockeren Umgang mit Farben, seine expressiven Formen und präzisen Schwünge gelingt es ihm, in seinen Bildern eine dichte Dynamik entstehen zu lassen. Neben der Sprühdose greift er auf so vielfältige Materialien wie Tusche, Acryl und Ölkreide zurück und erreicht so eine kontrastreiche, bewegte Oberfläche.
Stellen im Style Writing Schriftzeichen die Basis jeder Arbeit dar, so sind diese aus Falkners neueren Arbeiten gänzlich verschwunden. An ihre Stelle ist ein vom Künstler entwickeltes Formenvokabular getreten. Er schreibt seine Bilder: die Richtung des Schreibflusses von links nach rechts und die Kursivität von Buchstaben sind immer noch zu erkennen. Dabei ist jeder einzelne Strich, den er setzt, das Ergebnis einer konkreten Entscheidung: er soll nicht nur im Zusammenspiel mit den anderen Elementen funktionieren, sondern auch für sich allein stark sein. Als Produkt der menschlichen Handschrift wird der Strich nie vollkommen sein und gerade diesen Reiz des Imperfekten versucht der Künstler in seinen neuen Arbeiten herauszustellen.
Adrian Falkner arbeitet seit mehr als zwanzig Jahren unter dem Pseudonym SMASH137 als Graffiti Writer im Außenraum. Seine Präzision mit der Sprühdose und sein innovativer Umgang mit der traditionellen Formensprache des Style Writing gelten weltweit als prägend. Seit etwa zehn Jahren ist es sein Ziel, mit seiner Kunst nicht mehr nur innerhalb der Szene zu kommunizieren, sondern mit Arbeiten für den Innenraum und internationalen Galerie- & Museumsausstellungen auch alle anderen Menschen zu erreichen. Der Künstler lebt und arbeitet in Basel/Schweiz.
